Sixth Generation Celica Lighting Guide

The sixth generation Celica uses many different light bulbs. This page describes which light bulbs are used in the USDM sixth generation Toyota Celica.
If you're considering changing your headlight bulbs to aftermarket bulbs, be very careful to only install lights that run at the stock wattage, which is 55 watts for the low beams and OEM fog lights and 65 watts for the high beams. If you install any bulbs that run above that wattage, you run the risk of melting your headlight wiring and sockets, which are expensive and tough to replace. Aftermarket bulbs that run above stock wattage may do this because of the increased current that they draw. Aftermarket bulbs that run above stock wattage will most likely burn out much faster than bulbs that run at stock wattage.
Low Beam - 9006 (55 watts)
High Beam - 9005 (65 watts)
Fog Light - H3 (55 watts)
Turn Signal - 1157
Sidemarker - 194
Rear Turn Signal - 1156
Tail Light - 1157
Glove Box - 74
Guage Cluster - 194 (Larger Bulbs) and 74 (Smaller Bulbs)

It seems like Japan always gets the best when it comes to cars themselves and the parts on them. Japan and Europe get the all wheel drive, turbocharged GT-Four, and some models of the Celica have different tail-lights and projector headlights.
Some Toyota Celicas in Japan and Europe have tail-lights that are different than the USDM tail-lights. These tail-lights are found on some of the overseas sixth generation Toyota Celicas from 1996 on. They can be imported, but cost a lot of money to import from Japan. They are a direct replacement to your existing tail-lights, and use the same bulbs and wiring as your existing tail-lights. Although you probably won't be able to go to your Toyota dealer and order these, the part number for the left JDM tail-light is 81561-2B240 and the part number for the right is 81551-2B300.

Celica Generation 6 Short Ram Intake and Drop-in Filter Power Differences

Many have wondered about the benefits or drawbacks of short ram intakes such as the Weapon-R and the Injen, and drop-in filters such as K&N and Tom's Filters. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, but as far as performance goes, you may be surprised.
Recently, I took my '99 GT to a dyno facility to see how much horsepower it put down. We ran it multiple times, once with a drop in Tom's Racing air filter and once with an aftermarket intake system that wasn't a cold air intake.
With the drop-in filter, we got a peak output of 95.3 horsepower. With the intake, we got a peak output of 95.8 horsepower. Only a .5 horsepower difference. Take into consideration however, that we had the intake sticking out of the engine bay to draw in somewhat cold air. If you have a short ram intake with the hood closed, your performance may suffer a little bit more because of the hot air being drawn in. A heat shield or custom enclosure may help this problem.

Celica Generation 6 USDM Engine Specifications

In the US and Canada, the '94-99 Celica was produced with one of two engines. The ST has the 7A-FE engine, while the GT and the Canadian GT-S have the 5S-FE engine in them. The ST's 7A-FE was modified slightly in 1996 to incorporate OBD II, which is a system to control the engine more completely, so that emissions are better. This change dropped the horsepower by 5 horsepower and increased the torque by 2 lbs.-ft. of torque. The specifications of these engines are below.
Differences between the North American GT and ST Models

There are many differences between the North American GT model and the ST model of the sixth generation Toyota Celica. This article will list all of the differences, and highlight many of the similarities of the two models.
Both models were introduced to the market as a 1994 model. The ST is less inexpensive, and the GT is more expensive. The convertible body style of the Celica was only available as the GT model. Production of the ST model was stopped in 1997, so in 1998 and 1999, only the GT model was produced in the United States.
{AD} If you don't know if you have a GT or an ST, the easiest way to check is to look at the chassis code. You'll find this if you open your hood and look at the firewall, which is the back wall of the engine bay, closest to the cabin of your car. It's a combination of letters and numbers that starts with "AT", or "ST" that's engraved into the metal of your firewall. If this combination says "AT200", then you have a ST, and if it says "ST204", then you have a GT. If you have anything besides "AT200" or "ST204", then you either live out of the United States or your car was imported from another country. You can click to find more information on sixth generation Celica chassis codes.
