The Unauthorized Biography of the Toyota Celica gen 5...

5th Generation

The fifth generation Celica was introduced in the 1990 model year. Totally redesigning the styling, Toyota stayed with FWD and created a much more rounded and sculpted body. Arriving in both lift-back and sports coupe the 5th generation had a lower front end a higher rear end giving the Celica an angled, aggressive and sporty look. Released in 5 trims the All-Trac (or GT-4 in Europe) with 200HP and all wheel drive (AWD) was by far the most powerful. Identified by a prominent hood scoop and vents this model became one of the rarest and sought after Celicas ever released in the US.

The Unauthorized Biography of the Toyota Celica...

6th Generation (1994-99)

The 6th generation Celica was introduced in the US in the 1994 model year. The new model had more aerodynamic curves, unique "bug-eyes" and more aggressive look than the 5th generation Celica. Unfortunately, Toyota did little to back up the more aggressive look, dropping the all-trac from the US line, and leaving the engine and suspension basically unchanged. So similar were the two generations many improvements were overlooked. The already heavy Celica lost nearly 250 pounds during the facelift and a larger set of wheels improved the handling immensely. The base model Celica received a revised 1.8L engine with increased torque and improved drivability dramatically. The GT engine 2.2L engine stayed with the GT trim Celica with an unchanged 135HP powering a lightener car. The suspension was unchanged with both Celicas received MacPherson struts up front and Chapman struts in the rear. Inside the Celica took a turn for better receiving a higher quality materials and a better look than most sporty cars of the price range.

The Unauthorized Biography of the Toyota Celica...

7th Generation

It is 1998 and the Celica is clinging to life. The MR2 and Supra have been withdrawn to Japanese shores and the Celica is on life support. The current model of the Celica hasn't been truly redesigned since 1993...an eternity when you consider the short life spans of sporty cars. Although the Celica is officially produced until 1999 many US Toyota dealers don't even see the model on their lots. Rumors have the Celica disappearing from the Toyota lineup entirely.
Toyota decides to completely revamp the Celica and give the market what it is looking for. Aiming for the market that Honda has dominated so well for the past few years with the Civic/Integra, Toyota aims directly for the top of the line Integra GS-R. No longer building the Celica as a sporty/luxury car, the Toyota Celica is now designed for the inexpensive performance minded market. Extreme, Young and Racy is the new target Toyota is hoping to meet with the new Celica...
Design-wise Toyota turns to its CALTY design center to find a design that appeals to the younger market. Turning outside the Japanese designers Toyota hopes depart from the conservative "safe" image that Toyota is all too well known for. Below are the Sketches that Toyota decides to aim for.

2012 Toyota Celica Review and Prices

Recent media reports indicate Toyota and Subaru have restarted development of their compact-sport-coupe project. The companies suspended efforts in early 2009 due to economic conditions.
Mighty Toyota's once-popular sporty coupe is set to be reborn as a low-dollar, high-mpg Mazda MX5- and Hyundai Genesis Coupe-fighter with rear-wheel drive and a Subaru powertrain. Goliath teaming up with David? Yup, and it could be just the start of a beautiful friendship.

Sixth Generation Celica Lighting Guide

The sixth generation Celica uses many different light bulbs. This page describes which light bulbs are used in the USDM sixth generation Toyota Celica.
If you're considering changing your headlight bulbs to aftermarket bulbs, be very careful to only install lights that run at the stock wattage, which is 55 watts for the low beams and OEM fog lights and 65 watts for the high beams. If you install any bulbs that run above that wattage, you run the risk of melting your headlight wiring and sockets, which are expensive and tough to replace. Aftermarket bulbs that run above stock wattage may do this because of the increased current that they draw. Aftermarket bulbs that run above stock wattage will most likely burn out much faster than bulbs that run at stock wattage.
Low Beam - 9006 (55 watts)
High Beam - 9005 (65 watts)
Fog Light - H3 (55 watts)
Turn Signal - 1157
Sidemarker - 194
Rear Turn Signal - 1156
Tail Light - 1157
Glove Box - 74
Guage Cluster - 194 (Larger Bulbs) and 74 (Smaller Bulbs)

JDM Projectors and Tail Lights Info Celica generation 6

It seems like Japan always gets the best when it comes to cars themselves and the parts on them. Japan and Europe get the all wheel drive, turbocharged GT-Four, and some models of the Celica have different tail-lights and projector headlights.
Some Toyota Celicas in Japan and Europe have tail-lights that are different than the USDM tail-lights. These tail-lights are found on some of the overseas sixth generation Toyota Celicas from 1996 on. They can be imported, but cost a lot of money to import from Japan. They are a direct replacement to your existing tail-lights, and use the same bulbs and wiring as your existing tail-lights. Although you probably won't be able to go to your Toyota dealer and order these, the part number for the left JDM tail-light is 81561-2B240 and the part number for the right is 81551-2B300.

Celica Generation 6 Short Ram Intake and Drop-in Filter Power Differences

Many have wondered about the benefits or drawbacks of short ram intakes such as the Weapon-R and the Injen, and drop-in filters such as K&N and Tom's Filters. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, but as far as performance goes, you may be surprised.
Recently, I took my '99 GT to a dyno facility to see how much horsepower it put down. We ran it multiple times, once with a drop in Tom's Racing air filter and once with an aftermarket intake system that wasn't a cold air intake.
With the drop-in filter, we got a peak output of 95.3 horsepower. With the intake, we got a peak output of 95.8 horsepower. Only a .5 horsepower difference. Take into consideration however, that we had the intake sticking out of the engine bay to draw in somewhat cold air. If you have a short ram intake with the hood closed, your performance may suffer a little bit more because of the hot air being drawn in. A heat shield or custom enclosure may help this problem.

Celica Generation 6 USDM Transmission Gear Ratios

Here are the transmission ratios for the USDM '94-99 Toyota Celica ST and GT, and the Canadian GT-S.
GT / GT-S (Manual) 3.285 1.960 1.322 1.028 .820 3.153 4.176
ST (Manual) 3.166 1.904 1.310 .969 .815 3.250 4.058
GT / GT-S (Auto) 2.810 1.549 1.000 .706 N/A 2.296 3.950
ST (Auto) 4.005 2.208 1.425 .981 N/A 3.272 2.821

Celica Generation 6 USDM Engine Specifications

In the US and Canada, the '94-99 Celica was produced with one of two engines. The ST has the 7A-FE engine, while the GT and the Canadian GT-S have the 5S-FE engine in them. The ST's 7A-FE was modified slightly in 1996 to incorporate OBD II, which is a system to control the engine more completely, so that emissions are better. This change dropped the horsepower by 5 horsepower and increased the torque by 2 lbs.-ft. of torque. The specifications of these engines are below.

Differences between the North American GT and ST Models

There are many differences between the North American GT model and the ST model of the sixth generation Toyota Celica. This article will list all of the differences, and highlight many of the similarities of the two models.
Both models were introduced to the market as a 1994 model. The ST is less inexpensive, and the GT is more expensive. The convertible body style of the Celica was only available as the GT model. Production of the ST model was stopped in 1997, so in 1998 and 1999, only the GT model was produced in the United States.
{AD} If you don't know if you have a GT or an ST, the easiest way to check is to look at the chassis code. You'll find this if you open your hood and look at the firewall, which is the back wall of the engine bay, closest to the cabin of your car. It's a combination of letters and numbers that starts with "AT", or "ST" that's engraved into the metal of your firewall. If this combination says "AT200", then you have a ST, and if it says "ST204", then you have a GT. If you have anything besides "AT200" or "ST204", then you either live out of the United States or your car was imported from another country. History and Basic Info About Celica generation 6

In 1971, Toyota introduced the Celica in the US. Since then, the Celica has progressed, gradually becoming better and better. In October 8th, 1993, Toyota publicly unveiled the new sixth generation Celica. The sixth generation Celica featured strikingly beautiful curves, somewhat resembling the Celica's big brother, the Supra. The US only saw two models of the sixth generation Celica, the 1.8 liter 7A-FE powerd ST and the 2.2 liter 5S-FE powered GT. Gone were the mighty All-Trac and the GT-S. Canada recieved the GT-S in addition to the two other configurations.
In Europe and Japan and Australia, a sixth generation Celica GT-Four was offered. This car was powered by a 2.0 liter 3S-GTE turbocharged engine producing 239 horsepower in the European version and 251 horsepower in the Japanese version, pushing the car from 0-60 mph in just 6.1 seconds. The GT-Four also featured all wheel drive for outstanding handling and quick launches.

Sixth Generation Celica Chassis Codes

The chassis code on a sixth generation Celica can be used to identify what kind of Celica it is. It can be useful sometimes, because refering to Celicas simply by the type(GT, ST, etc.) can be misleading. For example, the USDM Celica GT is powered by the 135 horsepower 5S-FE engine, while the European Spec Celica GT is powered by the 180 horsepower 3S-GE engine. If you were on the phone with a tuner company in Europe and you just said "I drive a Celica GT.", and had them send you, say, a header for your car, then they might send you a header for a 3S-GE engine, which would not work for your car. This is why chassis codes are a better way to identify which kind of Celica you have.
The chassis code can be found under the hood on the firewall on sixth generation Celicas. It's a four to six character combination of letters and numbers. A couple example sixth generation chassis codes are AT200, ST202, and ST205.
